The School of Education is delighted to highlight the scholarly accomplishments of our faculty members for the Spring 2024 semester. There is much to be celebrated from grants and awards received, books and articles published, presentations given, and conferences organized.

Grants and Awards
Sarah Bonner
- Co-Principal Investigator, “Student Advancement and Internships in the Middle of a Computer Science Major,” National Science Foundation IUSE: HSI, $199,948. Principal Investigator: Katherine St. John.
Markus Bidell
Visiting International Research Fellow July 2023 to Present
Markus Bidell was awarded an international visiting research fellowship with content expertise in LGBTQI+ health care, clinical competence, and cultural humility at the University’s of Brighton, United Kingdom and University of Verona Hospital, Italy. The goal of the international visiting fellowship is to create a new LGBTQI+ clinical competency assessment scale for a broad range of health and mental health professionals. Moreover a primary focus is to create a multi-lingual scale that has global reach. The final goal is to house this modified global assessment at the World Health Organization in Geneva Switzerland and the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association-Europe (ILGA-Europe).
Gina Riley
Year 2: New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council (NYS DDPC). (2022 – 2028). Grant Title: Creating a Decision-Making Curriculum for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) in K-12th grade. ($200,000 per year for 4 years – $800,000 total).
Sal Ruiz
- Sal received the NYC Men’s Teach award in the Summer 2023 semester to provide incoming freshman to Hunter College with an opportunity to learn how to teach with a partner. The project taught students how to provide feedback, create lesson plans, check for understanding of material, and how to scaffold without using spoken language. Students then had the opportunity to share their knowledge with other attendees and Hunter College School of Education staff.
Melissa Schieble
- Melissa Schieble (Curriculum and Teaching) was awarded a grant from the Spencer Foundation for the project, “Exploring ‘Local Backup’ for Schools Targeted by the Anti-CRT ‘Conflict Campaigns’”. She is collaborating on the project with four colleagues: Aris Moreno Clemons (UT-Knoxville); Michiko Hikida (Ohio State University); Laura Taylor (Rhodes College) and Amy Vetter (UNC-Greensboro). Their research will explore the language and discourse practices leveraged by local stakeholders (e.g. union and school board members) to keep anti-racist and anti-oppressive education on the agenda in schools within polarized state and national contexts.
Debbie Sonu
- Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Partnership Engagement Grant, with colleagues at York University and Concordia. Entitled, “Children’s Museums and The Role of Storytelling in Learning from Difficult Knowledge.” This one-year seed grant uses survey methods to investigate how children’s museums across the U.S. and Canada mobilize narrative practices when engaging with histories of violence, struggle, and resistance. $24,962 .

Sal Ruiz
Graduate students from the School of Education’s Applied Behavior Analysis program – Emily Palmer, Sam Patrick, Demi Fragale, Jackie Koypt, and Rory Clancy – attended the 2023 International Precision Teaching Conference located in St. Pete Beach Florida. In addition to attending, Emily Palmer and Sam Patrick presented posters based on their thesis project and Demi Fragale presented her thesis results in a paper session. Sam and Demi were also recipients of a student scholarship awarded by the organization and each of the attendees was awarded the Presidential Student Engagement Award from Hunter College.
The students were in attendance with their thesis advisor Doctoral Lecturer Sal Ruiz. Demi and Sam donated some of their time to help support the conference. The students participated in paper sessions and networking with other professionals throughout the weekend.

Cara Elizabeth Furman
Podcast Launch: Thinking in the Midst: Philosophers of education talk about how their research can inform educational policy and teacher practice around current issues in the field. The goal of the podcast is to think with topics in conversation.
Lori Kent
In July 2023, I was artist-in-residence at the Center for Drawing Research in Caylus, France. The residency included an exhibition and workshop. The indigo, tan, and sepia images captured the flora of the region. Each cyanotype was put through a multiple step process of toning and overdrawing. In 2024-25, they will be a part of a larger exhibition proposal on Nature and Climate Change.
