Gifted Education Extension Advanced Certificate
Program Overview
This advanced certificate program will prepare you to work effectively with exceptionally capable learners and to take leadership roles in the field. NYS certification in Gifted Extension requires a valid base NYS teacher certification and a passing score on the Gifted Content Specialty Test (CST).
Coursework & Fieldwork:
Summer intensive option: Courses meet daily for 6 weeks from July to mid-August.
Fall/Spring start option: Courses meet in the afternoon and evening. Some courses may be available in an online or hybrid format. Students take 2 courses per semester and complete the program in one year.
Fieldwork is required in each course and may be completed in your school. Field placement options are also available.

Eligibility & Admission Requirements
This program is designed for applicants who hold New York State teacher certification.
- New York State teacher certification and a minimum of 15 credits of graduate study (master’s degree preferred) in education for a specific school population, with at least one course in human development (including child or adolescent development)
- A GPA of at least 3.5 in graduate courses
- A personal statement
- Two letters of recommendation from appropriate professional or academic sources
