Stephen Lassonde, Office of Prestigious Scholarships and Fellowships Director, is pleased to work with both undergraduate majors in Education and graduate students in the School of Education.
During Stephen’s tenure as Director, Hunter students have won virtually every national and international scholarship of note. In addition to meeting with students individually to discuss appropriate opportunities, he and his staff offer one-on-one review and feedback on application essays, and he teaches a one-week Personal Statement Workshop in January and a 5-week course in Summer Session I (sponsored by the School of Education) on Writing the Personal Statement.

School of Education Scholarships
Graduate Student Awards
Each year, the School of Education proudly awards scholarships to graduate students through the generosity of our donors. These scholarships support students across a wide range of programs.
How It Works
Students submit one application to be considered for all School of Education scholarship awards. Eligible applicants must:
- Complete the School of Education Scholarship Application
- Upload the required essay
- Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA (required for continuing students)
- Demonstrate financial need by submitting a FAFSA for the academic year
Scholarships are one-time awards ranging from $500 to $1,500.

Students do not need to apply to individual awards; recipients are matched based on eligibility for the following scholarships:

Undergraduate Student Awards
Newly Declared Undergraduate Student Awards
Through the support of generous donors, Wayne and Frances Knight Parrish, the School of Education offers 8 scholarships each fall to newly approved undergraduate education majors. No application is required. Awards are for a total of $10,000 and are awarded over 4 semesters.
Clinical Experience for Educator Development (CEED) Scholars
Hunter College is providing scholarship support for undergraduate candidates during their student teaching semester. Funds, up to $3,000 per candidate, can be used to offset Hunter College tuition and fees. In partnership with special organizations, the School of Education offers a number of special opportunity programs to support aspiring teachers and counselors.
NYC Men Teach
Part of the Young Men’s Initiative, NYC Men Teach is a partnership between the Office of the Mayor, the New York City Department of Education and the City University of New York which aims to improve the diversity of the New York City (NYC) teaching workforce by adding 1,000 male teachers of color into the teacher pipeline, a goal it surpassed by 2018. Robert Noyce Scholarship Program
Each Noyce Scholar will receive up to $20,000 in scholarship support in their last two years of their programs. Prior to the last year, as Noyce Associates, students will engage in paid STEM-related education experiences or STEM research. As part of the requirements to receive funding, Noyce Scholars must commit to teaching in a high-needs school for two years for every $10,000 in scholarship support received. TEACH Grant
The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program provides grants of up to $4,000 a year to eligible undergraduate and graduate students who are completing or plan to complete coursework needed to begin a career in teaching. Teacher Opportunity Corp II (TOC II)
The Teacher Opportunity Corps II (TOC II) is a New York State Education Department–funded program designed to support and increase the number of historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged individuals entering the teaching profession. External Scholarships
ACS-Hach Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Scholarship
The ACS-Hach Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Scholarship of up to $6000 is awarded to recent graduates and graduate students with limited work experience and an interest in becoming secondary chemistry teachers. Recipients must be pursuing a Masters degree in education or becoming certified as a chemistry/science teacher. AFCEA STEM Majors Scholarships for Undergraduate Students
Undergrad sophomores or juniors with a 3.0 GPA and majoring in math or statistics may be eligible. Visit the AFCEA STEM Majors Scholarship page for more information and to complete and application.
The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Career Development Grants
Career Development Grants supports the career progression of women by funding to women preparing to advance or change careers or re-enter the workforce. Primary consideration is given to women pursuing their first advanced degree or credentials in education, health and medicine, science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and social sciences. American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) Scholarships
The American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), in partnership with the American Council of the Blind (ACB), provides financial support each year to students who are blind or have low vision. There exists multiple scholarship opportunities for college and graduate students with legal blindness attending a post-secondary learning institution.

Barba Lotze Scholarship for Future Physics Teachers
Undergraduate students enrolled, or planning to enroll, in physics teacher preparation curricula and high school seniors entering such programs are eligible. Successful applicants receive a stipend of up to $3,000 and a complimentary American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) Student Membership for one year. Belle Zeller Scholarship Trust Fund
The Belle Zeller Scholarship Trust Fund provides scholarships to full-time CUNY undergraduate students with a GPA of 3.75 or higher.
Black Teacher Pipeline Fellowship
In partnership with the United Negro College Fund, the Center for Black Educator Development’s Black Teacher Pipeline Fellowship provides up to $5,000 annually for four years, up to $20,000 in stipends at the start of your fifth year of teaching and academic support and professional coaching. Cobell Scholarship Opportunity
The Cobell Scholarship is available to any post-secondary (after high school) student who is: an enrolled member of a US Federally-recognized Tribe, enrolled in or plans to enroll in full-time study and is degree-seeking while attending any nationally, regionally and industry accredited non-profit, public and private, institution. DC 37 Education Department Scholarships
The DC 37 Education Committee offers a number of scholarships for dependent children and grandchildren of eligible DC 37 members and retirees, as well as, scholarships for active members. Visit the DC 37 Education Department Scholarships page for information and to apply.
Higher Education Services Corporation
Visit the Higher Education Services Corporation and search for additional scholarships including the New York State (NYS) Masters in Education Teacher Incentive Scholarship and the New York State (NYS) Math and Science Teaching Incentive Program for graduate students.
HSF (Hispanic Scholarship Fund)

The Human Services Career Advancement Scholarship (HSCAS)
The Human Services Career Advancement Scholarship (HSCAS) is offered by CUNY and the New York City Mayor’s Office for workers at eligible organizations that hold human services contracts with the City of New York. Human Services Career Advancement Scholarship (HSCAS) will cover a maximum of 50% of total tuition costs at a participating CUNY.
Immigrants Rising

Intensive Teacher Institute for Teachers of the Blind and Visually Impaired (ITI-TVI)
ITI-TVI is designed to provide tuition assistance to students and teachers interested in becoming TVIs to address the shortage across the State. Learn more about funding and contract requirements on the NYS Education Department website.

Kappa Delta Pi Scholarships
Kappa Delta Pi recognizes and celebrates members through multiple scholarships. Visit the Kappa Delta Pi Scholarships page for eligibility and requirements.
Leon Bradley Scholarship Program
The Leon Bradley Scholarship Program was established to encourage People of Color to enter the field of teaching and school leadership. The American Association of School Personnel Administrators (AASPA) will annually award up to two scholarships to assist a minority candidate seeking their initial teaching certification endorsement. Each scholarship will be given in the amount of $3,500.00. Candidates will be eligible for the award if they are in their final year of completing certification/endorsement requirements, including student teaching if applicable. Marge A. Tierney Memorial Scholarship
The Marge A. Tierney Memorial Scholarship provides a $1,000 scholarship to a student enrolled in a graduate program in vocational rehabilitation counseling. Visit the New York State Education Department website for more information and to apply.
Nancy Larson Foundation College Scholarship
The Nancy Larson Foundation awards scholarships to promising students majoring in elementary education. Each year the Foundation awards five $1,500 scholarships to deserving college students. Visit the Nancy Larson Foundation for more information and to apply.
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Mathematics Education Trust Grants, Scholarships, and Awards
Funding ranges from $1,500 to $24,000 and is available to help math teachers, prospective teachers, and other math educators improve the teaching and learning of mathematics. Visit the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) grants page for information and to apply.
New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) CUNY Scholarship
New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) residents who are full-time undergraduate or graduate students at a CUNY college can apply for a one-time scholarship award of $1,000. Apply for a NYCHA-CUNY Scholarship.
New York City Public Schools Scholarship for Blind and Visually Impaired MSEd
Candidates admitted to the Blind and Visually Impaired MSEd program can apply for a scholarship with the NYS Public Schools. Learn more about the award and contract requirements on the Teach NYC Programs website.
Organization for Autism Research (OAR) Scholarships
Scholarships are available to Undergrad students with an Autism diagnosis attending 2 or 4 year universities. Visit the Organization for Autism Research (OAR) for information and to apply.
Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans
The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans provides merit-based funding for New Americans, immigrants and children of immigrants, who are poised to make significant contributions to US culture, society and academia.
The Fellowship supports one to two years of graduate study in any field and in any advanced degree-granting program in the United States.

Scholarships for Students with Cochlear Implants
Must be a Cochlear Nucleus, baha, or Osia recipient, undergrad or grad student, and maintain 3.0 grade point average (GPA). Visit the Cochlear Scholarships page for more information and to apply.
TeachNY Scholarships
Apply for a TeachNY Scholarship through the New York State Education Department. There are many scholarships available for various fields.
External Opportunities
Critical Language Scholarship
The Critical Language Scholarship allows any enrolled student to engage in an 8 to 10-week language immersion experience.
CUNY Reading Corps
CUNY Reading Corps tutors will support children with foundational reading skills using the Reading Ready or Reading Go! programs. Tutors work one-on-one or in small groups with kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade children in NYC Public Schools. As a CUNY Reading Corps tutor, you will build skills, extend your professional network, and add to your resume. CUNY undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for this part-time opportunity.
James Madison Graduate Fellowship for Adolescent Social Studies Students
Adolescent Social Studies students may be eligible for a James Madison Graduate Fellowship.
Paraprofessional to Teacher Pathway Graduate Reimbursement Program
The New York City Department of Education offers a Paraprofessional to Teacher Pathway Graduate Reimbursement Program to eligible Paraprofessionals who are interested in pursuing a career as a teacher and matriculated in a graduate education program.
