Fingerprint Clearance Requirements
All students in teacher preparation programs as well as programs in school counseling need to be fingerprinted so that they are cleared to work with children in various settings including New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) public schools, charter networks, and other organizations. Visit the Fingerprinting page for requirements and procedures.

Clinical Experiences
Students in the TESOL – Adult (MA) program participate in developmental field experiences (fieldwork) and supervised teaching (student teaching and practicum) administered by the Office of Clinical Experiences (OCE).
Fieldwork
Fieldwork is defined as a classroom experience in a real-world educational setting, such as an intensive English program at a local college, in conjunction with a course. Most courses have fieldwork requirements – consult the course sequence and course catalog for details
Registration, Placement and Application Processes and Procedures
For all courses which require fieldwork, after attending class, students will be placed by the Office of Clinical Experiences (OCE) Clinical Placement Specialist, in cooperation with faculty. Students do not have to apply before registering.

Supervised Teaching: Student Teaching/Practicum
Students participate in supervised teaching (student teaching and practicum) as the culmination of their course of study. Students are observed by Hunter College Clinical Supervisors throughout the semester.
Registration, Placement and Application Processes and Procedures
All students must apply for student teaching and practicum through the Office of Clinical Experiences for registration permission and to be placed.
Student Teaching
Student teaching requires three days per week for one semester at an academic ESL class in an English for Academic Purposes program.
Practicum
Students will teach a weekly Saturday course to complete their practicum teaching of 60 hours. Students are placed in the TESOL Program Community Outreach Program in English (COPE) at Hunter College by the TESOL Adult Program Coordinator.
Application
All students must apply for student teaching and/or practicum.

Registration and Placement Process
- The Clinical Placement Specialist reviews applications for eligibility.
- The Clinical Placement Specialist grants registration permission.
- One week before each semester registration opens, the Clinical Placement Specialist will inform students of next steps via their myhunter.cuny.edu email.

Certification and Licensure
This program does not lead to New York State certification.
Graduation
Graduation is the official completion of your program and conferral of an academic degree. In order to graduate, students must apply for graduation using CUNYFirst the semester before the semester of their planned graduation and complete any outstanding requirements by the stated deadlines.
