School of Education Faculty Receive National Science Foundation Research Awards
Prof. Sarah M. Bonner, Associate Professor of Educational Psychology, was awarded a National Science Foundation Discovery Research grant as Principal Investigator for a two-year exploratory project called “Integrating Formative Assessment of Computational Thinking with Self-Regulated Learning.” The project is aimed at developing, refining, testing, and validating an assessment prototype to illustrate the synergy among formative assessment, computational thinking, and self-regulated learning within the discipline of computer science. She is joined by her Co-Principal Investigators Katherine St. John, Thomas O’Connell and Hunter School of Education Prof. Peggy P. Chen.
Prof. Bonner was also awarded a National Science Foundation Alliances-Minority Participation grant for a five-year project called “Louis Stokes STEM Pathways and Research Alliance: NYC LSAMP Alliance” as a Co-Principal Investigator and research lead. The Principal Investigator is Jose L. Cruz. The 2018-2023 NYCLSAMP program activities at 11 participating CUNY institutions will provide evidence-based interventions for advising, curricular design and mentored research experiences to stimulate learning and strengthen academic and research skills among minority students underrepresented in STEM disciplines. The program’s goal is to attract, engage, recruit and retain community college and four-year undergraduate STEM students to degree completion.
Prof. Karen Koellner, Director of Childhood Education, was awarded a National Science Foundation grant as Principal Investigator for a study called “Taking a Deep Dive (TaDD): Investigating PD impact on what teachers take up and use in their classroom.” TaDD is a 3-year study that will examine teachers’ uptake of content, pedagogy and materials from different types of professional development in order to understand and unpack the factors that are associated with what teachers take up and use two to three years beyond their original PD experience. She is joined by her Co-Principal Investigators Nanette Seago, WestED and Hunter School of Education Prof. Nicora Placa
