The Course Sequence and Program Tracker is the required sequence of courses, exams, and workshops. Students must use the Course Sequence and Program Tracker in conjunction with the Course Catalog to find course descriptions, progress standards, and exit requirements.

Students who graduate from their teacher preparation programs in Fall 2023 or later, will be required to complete a teacher preparation assessment (TPA) as a requirement for program completion. As of April 2022, the Hunter College School of Education is reviewing the options for the TPA and we will have more information available for students in the coming months.

Semester 1 – Spring

  • Students must add their Philosophy Statement created in SPEDE 768.

  • Educating All Students (EAS). Passing is required prior to second semester student teaching or practicum.

  • Students must add their Individualized Assessment and Lesson Plan (Parts I, II, and III) and revised Philosophy Statement created in SPEDE 776.

Semester 5 – Summer

  • SPED 706: Strategies and Curriculum Adaptations for Learners with Severe/Multiple Disabilities (3 credits)
  • HED 715: Health Education for Special Educators (1 credit)

Exams

  • Content Specialty Test (CST) – Multisubject. Parts 1 and 2 are birth through Grade 2; Part 3 is non-age specific. Passing is required prior to the second semester of student teaching or practicum.

Workshop

  • Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) Training – This workshop is a graduation requirement and can be completed at Hunter College or outside of Hunter College. Students who have already completed Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) Training for a previous certification do not have to take it again.

Semester 6 – Fall

Courses

  • SPEDE 774: Adaptations for Individual Learners Across the K-2 Curriculum (3 credits)
  • SPED 792: Language Development and Alternative Communication Systems for Learners with Low Incidence Disabilities: Severe Disabilities including Deafblindness (3 credits)

AND

  • SPEDE 77810: Initial Student Teaching in Early Childhood Special Education (3 credits)

OR

  • SPEDE 77910: Initial Practicum in Early Childhood Special Education (3 credits)

Exams

  • Content Specialty Test (CST) – Students with Disabilities. This exam is a certification requirement.

Portfolio

  • Students must submit their Reflecting on Growth no later than the second class session of SPEDE 778/77910.
  • Students must add their Transdisciplinary Small Group Lesson created in SPEDE 778/910.
  • Students must add their RTI Review created in SPEDE 774.

Portfolio

Students must submit their final portfolio no later than 2 weeks prior to the end of the semester. This includes their revised Philosophy Statement created in SPEDE 778/920 and Culminating Reflection and Action Plan for Lifelong Learning. Failure to submit a complete portfolio by the due date can delay graduation until the next semester.

Students must apply for certification in their final semester. Refer to the program Certification page for requirements and step by step instructions.

Notes

  • SPEDE 773 is a yearlong course. Students take 1.5 credits each semester.
  • Students working full-time in a setting that meets the ECSE requirements to use as a Practicum site may choose to complete the following to assist in maintaining employment:
    • Either SPEDE 77910 or SPEDE 77920 for 3 credits AND SPEDE 77900 for 2 credits during the regular academic (Fall/Spring) semesters in your worksite.AND
    • SPEDE 77800 for 1 credit in the summer session that runs from July through August, prior to, between, or after SPEDE 77810 or SPEDE 77820 and SPEDE 77800. The Office of Clinical Experiences (OCE) will place you to meet the age requirement not covered in SPEDE 776 and your worksite. You are required to actively participate in this setting 5 full days per week for the entire summer session and create and implement a supervised lesson.
