Anthony Voulgarides

Doctoral Student
Anthony Voulgarides is a doctoral student, secondary English teacher, and teacher leader whose work bridges research and classroom practice at the intersection of adolescent literacy and youth civic engagement. For over twenty years, he has taught in New York City public schools, primarily with first- and second-generation immigrant students in Washington Heights and the Bronx. His classroom practice is grounded in sociocultural approaches to English education and centers students as co-investigators of language, identity, and power.
Anthony integrates traditional instruction in rhetoric and composition with project-based learning, youth participatory action research (YPAR), and critical media studies to connect academic literacy with students’ lived experiences and community knowledge. In addition to his K–12 work, he serves as an adjunct lecturer and cooperating teacher in English Education at Hunter College, where he mentors pre-service teachers in developing equity-centered, critically engaged pedagogies.
His scholarship is guided by a commitment to the integration of theory and practice in pursuit of more just and democratic classrooms.
