Background

Wendy Poveda is the principal of PS 132 M, The Juan Pablo Duarte School in New York City. She is Dominican American, born and raised in Washington Heights, New York. She has been an educator for seventeen years. She was a student and a teacher at the school she now leads as principal.

Since becoming principal, Wendy established the Juan Pablo Duarte Cares Initiative, an equity centered approach to meeting the needs of the whole child. Through this initiative, she opened the first in school washer/dryer in district six , a mindfulness room, an art studio, and a pantry to address the needs of her students and families. Wendy was the first in her family to attend college.

She is a graduate of Columbia University. Wendy holds a Master’s degree from Fordham University and an Advanced Certificate in Educational Leadership from Long Island University. Wendy is a graduate of the NYC Leadership program (LEAP) and a recipient of the Maestra Meritoria Award from El Consul General de la República Dominicana. She is a dedicated mother of three who is passionate about teaching & learning as a vehicle to transform lives.
