Gray Fellow 2023 to 2024

Background

Dr. Kayon Pryce EdD is the Founding Principal of the Brooklyn STEAM Center – a shared instruction public high school fully immersed inside a place of work. Through a pioneering collaboration with the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation, former Brooklyn Borough President – Eric Adams (Mayor), Chancellor Dr. Lester Young, and the New York City Department of Education, Kayon launched a socio-economically diverse school that brings together scholars from across 8 different high schools for the purpose of future-focused industry and post-secondary education aligned programming within 5 sectors.

Through his collaborative approach to school leadership and his philosophy of “building with and NOT for,” Kayon continues to engage in innovative school improvement and educational reform efforts through his work and collaboration with the New School Venture Fund, Transcend, XQ schools, AAQEP and several other public and private partnerships across education, workforce development, private industry, and philanthropy. He values and prioritizes scholar, alumni, family, and industry partner input and feedback and regularly convenes with these stakeholder groups to continue improving his school community. Through these efforts, he recently launched a co-designed continuing education “Communiversity” program that provides evening and weekend programming to older youth, families, and community members in the areas of NYS Real Estate licensing, Construction, Culinary, Manufacturing, Computer Literacy, and more.

Kayon is a proud product of the New York City public school system and has dedicated his entire adult life to the service of the children and families of NYC. He began his career as an apprentice teacher at 18 through the NYC Department of Education’s Success Via Apprenticeship program. He has spent the last 20+ years working as a Career and Technical Education Teacher, District Leader, Assistant Principal, and Founding Principal.
