Josette Claudio

2022-2023 Gray Fellow

Background

Since 1995, Josette Claudio has served as an educator in the New York City Department of Education. After being the first member of her family to graduate from college (immediate and extended family), Josette had a strong desire to return to the New York City Department of Education where she attended elementary, middle and high school to be able to provide other students, like her with equal access to a quality education. Over the span of 27 years, Josette has served in the capacity of classroom teacher, Literacy Coach, Mentor and Dean. Josette answered the call to leadership when she joined Cohort 9 of the New York City Leadership Academy. After graduating from the NYC Leadership Academy, she accepted the position to lead at P.S. 109, The Sedgwick School. Josette has a strong passion to dismantle oppressive systems and structures that hinder students from learning. Throughout her 10 years of serving as the principal of PS 109, she has remained a life long learner, partnering with Positive Learning Collaborative to strengthen her social emotional skill set, receiving coaching from a NYC Leadership Academy mentor to improve her leadership competencies, participating in the Learning Partners program to improve instructional outcomes and is now a proud member of her district’s Equity and Assessment teams.

Josette is a firm believer that when she does better, others will as well. Josette is excited to be a member of the Gray Fellowship program where she will strengthen her leadership skills to continue to grow teacher practice and cultivate a culturally relevant environment where students can be the leaders of change in our society.
