Yvrose Pierre

Gray Fellow 2024 to 2025

Background

I am currently the Principal of the Brooklyn School for Career Development/Aveyron Academy, with over 30 years of experience leading New York City schools and educating children. Throughout my career, I have served in various roles, including Assistant Principal, Instructional Supervisor, Educational Evaluator, Special Education Teacher, and Early Intervention Specialist.

In 2010, I became a Columbia University Cahn Fellow, and later, I was honored by Education Update as the Outstanding Educator of the Year (2016-17). I am also a member of the Black Caucus of the CSA and a Co-Founder of the Society of Haitian School Administrators, where I currently serve as president. I take great pride in sharing my experiences and shaping future leaders through my work as a NYCDOE Lead Faculty member with the APLI program and as a Wallace Foundation Faculty member, preparing assistant principals for future principal roles. Recently, I was selected to be a member of Chancellor Banks’ Advisory Team.

My extensive experience has allowed me to lead my school through significant milestones with a visionary approach. I have focused on cultivating school pride and encouraging excellence among faculty members, students, and parents, which has resulted in student success. I have implemented a variety of programs, including Auto Shop, Cosmetology, Media Arts, Mock Court, Graphic Arts, Culinary Arts, and an effective Transition program that connects students to local businesses through internships. I developed the first Career Ready School for District 75, and under my leadership, the Brooklyn School for Career Development/Aveyron Academy has consistently been rated as a “Well-Developed School” in all Quality Reviews.

I continue to expand successful programs for all students and the Brooklyn community by working directly with campus Principals to develop inclusive programs for all students. I am the Founding Principal of Aveyron Academy, Aveyron STEAM Academy, Aveyron Soleil Academy, Aveyron Star Academy, Aveyron Business Academy, Aveyron Technical Academy, and the New Millennium Business Academy. Our students continue to excel, and graduation and attendance rates have increased each year!

As a passionate advocate for all students, my work with students with special needs is particularly significant. Advocacy for students is my top priority, and my dedication stems from my personal experience as the mother of a daughter with a severe hearing impairment. My daughter is now a thriving member of her community after earning her degree in Social Work from the University of Rochester. My commitment to advocacy is reflected in my dissertation, entitled “Ableism: Refuting the Marginalization of Students by Empowering School Leaders,” which emphasizes the importance of providing fair and adequate support to all students.
