The Department of Academic Literacy and Linguistics at Borough of Manhattan Community College seeks Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders, for English as a Second Language (ESL), developmental reading, and critical thinking courses, to work between 4 to 16 hours per week during the Spring 2023 semester.

Tutors will attend one class meeting per week (approximately 2 hours) for each section they are assigned to and will also plan 2-hour out-of-class review session(s) to students in that class (usually directly before or after class time). During class, Supplemental Instruction Leaders may give extra help to students individually, lead or participate in small group activities, or support students in other ways as negotiated by the instructor and Supplemental Instruction Leader.

Supplemental Instruction Leaders will also be asked to participate in one-hour paid training session(s) during the semester; training workshop(s) will either be campus sessions offered at multiple times and/or as online modules.

This is a good opportunity for pre-service teachers to gain classroom experience and learn by working with English as a second language (ESL), reading, and critical thinking instructors and students.

Teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) and Literacy students preferred, but English majors or students with strong reading and writing skills are also encouraged to apply.  Experience working with ESL or developmental reading students is a plus. Hourly rate for tutors with under 64 credits (no college degree) $16.33; Associate’s degree or 64 credits, $16.67; Bachelor’s degree, $17.90; Master’s degree, $19.67; Doctorate, $21.97.
