Memorial Service for Professor George Gonzalez

Fri, Jun 14 2019 3:00pm-5:00pm

The entire Hunter community mourns the loss of George Gonzalez, a longtime member of the School of Education faculty, who was a member of the Department of Curriculum and Teaching from 1986 until 2011. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 14 at 3:00pm at PS 171 (E103 street between 5th and Madison).

Beloved by students and colleagues alike, Professor Gonzalez was dedicated to using his position to strengthen community connections and improve educational opportunities for the city’s highest-need students. That commitment was exemplified through his longstanding mentorship of teachers and school leaders in East Harlem, as well as the vital role he played forging Hunter’s partnership with PS/MS 171 in that neighborhood.

Professor Gonzalez earned deep respect throughout the education field. In the late 1980s, he was awarded a Rockefeller Grant to bolster recruitment of teachers of color. He also steered development of the Quality Urban Elementary School Teachers (QUEST) program, which prepares undergraduates at the School of Education to support the wide range of needs found among New York City first through sixth-grade students.
