Visual Arts Education (MA) 2-Year Course Sequence

 

Academic Plan: VSARTED-MA

This is a suggested two-year course sequence. Students must meet with their faculty advisor before registering for classes.

Students who graduate from their teacher preparation programs in Fall 2023 or later, will be required to complete a teacher preparation assessment (TPA) as a requirement for program completion. As of April 2022, the Hunter College School of Education is reviewing the options for the TPA and we will have more information available for students in the coming months.

Year 1 Semester 1

Courses

  • ARTH 73400 – Theory and Criticism Art (3 credits)
  • SEDF 70300 – Social Foundations of Adolescent Education (3 credits)
  • CEDF 71200 – Child and Adolescent Development (4 credits, includes fieldwork hours)
  • SEDC 71000 – Building the Foundations of Literacy in Adolescent Education (3 credits)
  • SEDC 72000 – Adolescent Health and Safety (1 credit)

Year 1 Semester 2

Courses

  • SPED 70800 – Teaching Students with Special Needs in Inclusive Settings (3 credits)
  • SEDF 70500 – Educational Psychology: Applications to Adolescent Education (KC) (2 credits, includes fieldwork hours)
  • ARTED 71000 – Methods for Childhood Art Education – Grades PreK-6 (KC) (3 credits) or ARTED 71100 – Methods of Teaching the Visual Arts Grade 7-12 (KC) (3 credits)
  • ARTCR 75100 – Special Topics in Studio Art (to be taken twice with different topics, 3 credits)

  • ARTH 78000 – Special Topics in Art (3 credits)
  • SEDC 706 – Assessment of Teaching and Learning in Adolescent Education (2 credits)

Year 2 Term 2

Courses

  • ARTED 71200 – Student Teaching in the Visual Arts Grades Pre-K-12 (KC) (5 credits)
    • Students must prepare a portfolio of materials during their student teaching clinical experience to demonstrate readiness to teach including lesson plans and unedited video recordings of themselves at work in the classroom.
