Literacy Education: Birth-Grade 6 (MSEd) 6 Semester Course Sequence and Program Tracker – Spring Start

 

Academic Plan: LTYB6-MSED

This is a sample six semester plan of courses for students entering in the spring. Students must consult with their faculty advisor to determine their individualized course of study before registering for classes. Please note the following two sequence of courses must be taken consecutively:

  • EDLIT 73100, EDLIT 73600, EDLIT 73700
  • EDLIT 73100, EDLIT 74200, EDLIT 74500, EDLIT 74000

Semester 1 – Spring

Courses

  • EDLIT 73500 – Survey of Instructional Approaches to Literacy Education: Grades K-12 (3 credits)
  • ECC 70400fw – Language & Lit: Birth-Grade 2 (3 credits)
    • Can exempt if you are certified in early childhood

Progress Workshop

Attendance is required at this 1 hour workshop. The workshop discusses:

  • progress standards
  • technology competences
  • graduation requirements
  • orientation for the program e-Portfolio

Semester 2 – Fall

Courses

  • EDLIT 73300 – Methods of Teaching Writing (3 credits)
  • EDLIT 73200 – Children’s Literature (3 credits)
    • Can exempt with Undergraduate/Graduate transcript and departmental approval

Semester 3 – Spring

Courses

  • EDLIT 73100 – Literacy Assessment (KC) (3 credits)
    • Prerequisite ECC 70400, EDLIT 73500 and 9 credits of coursework
  • EDLIT 73000 – Language, Literacy and Culture (3 credits)

Semester 4 – Fall

Courses

  • EDLIT 73900 – Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Literacies for Students with Diverse Needs (3 credits)
    • Can exempt if you are certified in special education
  • EDLIT 73400 – Literacies within the Disciplines (3 credits)
    • Prerequisite ECC 70400, EDLIT 73500 and 9 credits of coursework
  • EDLIT 74200 – Practicum in Literacy (1 credit)
    • Prerequisite EDLIT 73100

Semester 5 – Spring

Courses

  • EDLIT 73600 – Practicum in Literacy Assessment (3 credits)
    • Prerequisite EDLIT 73100
  • EDLIT 74500 – Literacy Research for Change (3 credits)
    • Prerequisite is EDLIT 74200

Graduation Workshop

Attendance is required at this 1 hour workshop. The workshop discusses:

  • graduation audit
  • graduation requirements
  • certification requirements
  • final entries in the program ePortfolio

Semester 6 – Fall

Courses

  • EDLIT 73700 Practicum in Literacy Intervention (3 credits)
    • Prerequisite EDLIT 73600
  • EDLIT 74000 – Leadership in Literacy (3 credits)
    • Prerequisite is EDLIT 74500

Notes

  • Students must apply for graduation the semester before their planned graduation. Refer to the Graduation and Commencement page for full policies and procedures.
  • Students apply for Professional certification after completing three years of full-time, paid teaching experience including one year of mentored teaching. Please, refer to Certification and Licensure page for requirements and step by step instructions. For certification students must complete a Dignity for All Students (DASA) workshop. For students who have already completed this workshop, please email proof of completion to soeoasa@hunter.cuny.edu.
