The Course Sequence and Program Tracker is the required sequence of courses, exams, and workshops. Students must use the Course Sequence and Program Tracker in conjunction with the Course Catalog to find course descriptions, progress standards, and exit requirements.

Semester 1 – Fall

Courses

  • SPEDE 768: Fostering Development in Young Children with Diverse Abilities: Historical, Political, and Inclusive Perspectives (3 credits)
  • SPEDE 769: Evaluation, Assessment, and Program Planning for Infants and Young Children with Special Needs (3 credits)

Students must add their Philosophy Statement created in SPEDE 768.

Semester 2 – Spring

Courses

  • SPED 770: Individualized Planning, Implementation and Progress Monitoring in Early Childhood (Birth through PreK) Environments and Curricula (3 credits)
  • SPEDE 772: Positive Behavior Support (PBS) and its Application to Young Children with Special Needs (3 credits)
  • SPEDE 773: Families, Parenting and Family-Professional Partnerships: Theories, Research and Practices (3 credits yearlong – First Semester)

Portfolio

Students must submit their Reflecting on Growth no later than the second class session of SPEDE 770.

Semester 3 – Summer

  • SPEDE 776: Introductory Field Experiences in Early Childhood Special Education (2 credits)

Portfolio

  • Students must add their Individualized Assessment and Lesson Plan (Part I, II, and III) and revised Philosophy Statement created in SPEDE 776.

Workshop

  • Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) Training – This workshop is a graduation requirement and can be completed at Hunter College or outside of Hunter College. Students who have already completed Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) Training for a previous certification do not have to take it again.

Semester 4 – Fall

Courses

  • SPED 792: Language Development and Alternative Communication Systems for Learners with Low Incidence Disabilities: Sever Disabilities including Deafblindness (3 credits)
  • SPEDE 771: Autism Spectrum Disorder: Characteristics and Implications for Intervention (3 credits)
  • SPEDE 773: Families, Parenting and Family-Professional Partnerships: Theories, Research, and Practices (3 credits yearlong – Second Semester)

  • SPEDE 77820: Final Student Teaching in Early Childhood Special Education (3 credits)

  • SPEDE 77920: Final Practicum in Early Childhood Special Education (3 credits)

Portfolio

Students must submit their final portfolio no later than two weeks prior to the end of the semester. This includes their revised Philosophy Statement created in SPEDE 778/920 and Culminating Reflection and Action Plan for Life Long Learning. Failure to submit a complete portfolio by the due date can delay graduation until the next semester.

Exams

  • Content Specialty Test (CST) – Students with Disabilities. This exam is a certification requirement

Students must apply for certification in their final semester. Refer to the Certification and Licensure page for requirements and step by step instructions.

Notes

  • SPEDE 773 is a yearlong course. Students take 1.5 credits each semester.

    Students working full-time in a setting that meets the ECSE requirements to use as a Practicum site may choose to complete the following to assist in maintaining employment:

    • Either SPEDE 77910 or SPEDE 77920 for 3 credits AND SPEDE 77900 for 2 credits during the regular academic (Fall/Spring) semesters in your worksite.

      AND

    • SPEDE 77800 for 1 credit in the summer session that runs from July through August, prior to, between, or after SPEDE 77810 or SPEDE 77820 & SPEDE 77800. The OCE will place you to meet the age requirement not covered in SPEDE 776 and your worksite. You are required to actively participate in this setting 5 full days per week for the entire summer session and create and implement a supervised lesson.
