  • This is a three-year working student plan. Only 7 credits can be waived of the ECC courses with proof of prior coursework using the Exemption Waiver Form.
  • Students who graduate from their teacher preparation programs in Fall 2023 or later, will be required to complete a teacher preparation assessment (TPA) as a requirement for program completion. As of April 2022, the Hunter College School of Education is reviewing the options for the TPA and we will have more information available for students in the coming months.

Workshop

  • Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) Training
    • The DASA workshop can be completed at Hunter College or outside of Hunter College. Take before applying to practicum. This is a graduation requirement.

Winter Session 1

  • ECC 71200 – Pre-Student Teaching Field Placements in Early Childhood (1 credit, 10 days in a school)
    • Application due prior semester.
    • Can only be waived with 1 year general education employment.
    • Offered Fall, Winter, Spring, NOT summer.

    • Passing is required prior to beginning student teaching or practicum.

  • SPED 79200 – Language Development and Alternative Communication Systems for Learners with Low Incidence Disabilities: Severe Disabilities including Deafblindness (3 credits, includes fieldwork hours)
  • SPEDE 77200 – Positive Behavior Support (PBS) and Its Application to Young Children with Special Needs (3 credits, includes Fieldwork hours)

    • Passing is required prior to beginning student teaching or practicum.

  • SPEDE 79552 – Pre K, Practicum in Early Childhood Special Education with an Annotation in Severe Multiple Disabilities (2 credits; you find full employment with students with severe/ multiple disabilities)

Spring Semester 3

  • SPED 79300 – Total Communication for Learners with Severe/Multiple Disabilities (2 credits, includes Fieldwork hours)
  • SPEDE 77400 – Adaptations for Individual Learners Across the K-2 Curriculum (3 credits, includes Fieldwork hours)

Student Teaching or Practicum (2 Semesters Required)

Students must prepare a portfolio of materials in conjunction with their second semester clinical experience to demonstrate readiness to teach including lesson plans and unedited video recordings of themselves at work in the classroom.

  • SPEDE 79550 – K-2, Student Teaching in Early Childhood Special Education with an Annotation in Severe Multiple Disabilities (2 credits; we place you for 3 days a week for 12 weeks)
