This is a recommended Program Sequence for Spring 2025 admits and beyond with or without prior New York State Certification. Students can consult with their faculty advisor to create an individualized course sequence.

  • Up to 9 credits can only be exempted in this program based on prior coursework.

  • SPED 74300 – Braille Literacy and Communication Skills for Learners with Visual Impairments (3 credits)
    • Includes 10 hours of fieldwork
  • SPED 79100 – Alternative Assessment for Learners with Low Incidence Disabilities: Visual Impairment, DeafBlindness, and Multiple Disabilities (3 credits)
    • Includes 15 hours of fieldwork

Academic and Professional Milestones

  • Students must take and pass Content Specialty Test (CST) – Blind and Visually Impaired before beginning Student Teaching or Supervised Teaching. Notes this exam requires scheduling earlier than other New York State Teacher Certification Exams. Schedule via the New York State Certification Examinations (NYSTCE) website in April for July test administration.
  • Students must apply for Student or Supervised Teaching for next semester. Refer to the program home page for full policies and procedures.

  • SPED 74550 – Mathematical Literacy and Nemeth Code for Learners with Visual Impairments (3 credits)
    • Includes Fieldwork hours

  • SPED 70450 – Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students (3 credits)

Fall Semester 2

Courses

  • SPED 70650 – Strategies and Curriculum Adaptations for Learners with Multiple Disabilities (3 credits)
    • Includes 15 hours of fieldwork
  • SPED 74600 – Educational Implications of Learners Who Are Deafblind (3 credits)
    • Includes Fieldwork hours
  • And either Student Teaching or Supervised Teaching for one semester. Only offered in the fall:
    • SPED 74850 Student Teaching: Blindness and Visual Impairment, Preschool – Grade 12 (4 credits; we place you for 5 days a week for 14 weeks)
      • OR
    • SPED 74852 Supervised Teaching: Blindness and Visual Impairment, Preschool–Grade 6 or SPED 74853 Grades 7-12 (4 credits; you find full time employment with students with visual impairments)

  • Students must apply for graduation the semester before their planned graduation. Refer to the Graduation page for full policies and procedures.

Spring Semester 2

  • SPED 74700 – Principles and Practices in Orientation and Mobility for Teachers of Learners with Visual Impairments (3 credits, includes 10 hours of fieldwork)
  • SPED 70200 – Creating Classroom Culture in Special Education and Inclusive Settings (3 credits, includes 15 hours of fieldwork)

Academic and Professional Milestones

  • Students apply for certification after degree has been conferred. You will receive an email once Hunter’s recommendation has been entered on your TEACH Account with the steps to apply. Refer to the Certification and Licensure page for more information.
