  • SPED 70200 – Classroom Management in Special Education and Inclusive Settings (3 credits)
  • EDLIT 75500 – Literacy Instruction for Struggling Readers and Writers: Grades 5-12 (3 credits, includes Fieldwork hours)

Semester 2 – Summer

Courses

  • SPED 70450 – Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students (3 credits; Prerequisite: SPED 70050 )
  • SPED 70300 – Inclusive Instruction in General Education Classrooms for Students with Learning and Behavior Disorders (3 credits, includes Fieldwork hours)

Semester 3 – Fall

  • SPED 77100 – Methods of Teaching Reading for Adolescents with Learning Disabilities (3 credits, includes Fieldwork hours)
  • SPED 77200 – Supervised Clinical Teaching of Adolescents with Disabilities: Part I (2 credits)
  • SEDC 71600 – Math: Curriculum and Methods – Grades 7-12 (3 credits)
  • SEDC 71800 – Science: Curriculum and Methods – Grades 7-12 (3 credits)
  • SPED 77600 – Writing and Executive Function for Adolescents with Learning Disabilities (2 credits)

Exams

By the middle of semester five, students without initial certification must have taken and passed the following certification exams:

  • Educating All Students (EAS) Exam
  • Content Special Test (CST – Students with Disabilities
  • Content Special Test (CST – Multisubject (3 parts) Grade 7-12

By the middle of semester five, students with initial certification must have taken and passed the following certification exams:

  • Content Special Test (CST – Students with Disabilities
  • Content Special Test (CST – Multisubject (3 parts) Grade 7-12

Apply for

SPED 77500 or SPED 77550

Students should apply by the middle of the semester (the application will automatically sent out to students through their myHunter email). Students must meet with advisor prior to application for SPED 77500 and SPED 77550.

Semester 6 – Summer

Courses

  • SPED 78000 – The Study of Learning Disabilities in Children and Adolescents (3 credits; Prerequisite: SPED 70050)

Semester 7 – Fall

Courses

  • SPED 77500 – Supervised Student Teaching of Adolescents with Learning Disabilities (3 credits)

OR

  • SPED 77550 – Supervised Practicum: Grades 7-12 (3 credits)

Certification

Students must apply for certification in their final semester. Refer to the program Certification and Licensure page for requirements and step by step instructions.

  • There are 48 total credits in the program.
  • SEDC 72000 – Adolescent Health and Safety, is available every semester including summer and winter sessions.
  • SPED 77100 – Courses are offered in Fall semester only.
  • SPED 77300 – Courses are offered in Spring semester only.
  • SPED 77200 is offered in Fall semester only; SPED 77400 is offered in Spring semester only.
  • SEDC 71800, SEDC 71600, SPED 77600 – Courses are offered in Fall semester only.
  • EDLIT 75500, SEDF 71400, SEDC 71700 – Courses are offered in Spring semester only.
  • SPED 70050 replaces the requirement of SPED 70000 indicated in the course catalog.
  • SPED 70450 replaces the requirement of SPED 70400 indicated in the course catalog.
  • Students can exempt/ waver up to twelve credits of matching graduate coursework. See advisor for details at the beginning of program.
  • In addition to the Certification Exams, students must complete the Dignity for All Students (DASA) workshop prior to graduation. The Dignity for All Students (DASA)workshop can be completed at Hunter College or outside of Hunter College.
