Michael Middleton

Dean
Michael Middleton is the Klara and Larry Silverstein Dean of the School of Education at Hunter College. He began his professional career as a high school mathematics teacher in Massachusetts working with at-risk youth. His research focuses on the relation of classroom and cultural contexts on adolescent achievement motivation and well-being. His examination of motivation in diverse community settings locally, nationally and internationally and has received funding for this work through the National Science Foundation. His scholarship includes his book Motivation to Learn: Transforming Classroom Culture to Support Student Achievement. At the University of New Hampshire he held the John and H. Irene Peters Professorship in Education and was a recipient of a UNH Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award. Before coming to Hunter College, he was Dean of the College of Education and Human Development at University of Massachusetts Boston where he led the College in being fully engaged in the community through research, teaching and outreach.
