The Fight for Humanity: A Parent’s Vision of Inclusion and Equity

Families, including families of color, have always been at the forefront of advocacy for inclusion of individuals with disabilities as a civil rights issue.

In this session, we will re-imagine and re-envision inclusion using the stories of one family from early intervention through building a community for post-high school. These stories will demonstrate how their experiences in these systems were deeply impacted by the intersections of their identities. Participants will undertake visioning work that results in practices to ensure equitable outcomes for children and their families.

Continuing Teacher and Leadership Education (CTLE) credits will be provided.

The session will be co-facilitated by Dr. Carol Trivette, the 2019-2020 Elise C. Tepper Education Fellow, and Talina Jones, an advocate for families who have children with disabilities. Talina Jones is the Chair of the NYS Early Intervention Coordinating Council, a trainer for the Early Intervention Partners Training Project and serves on the board of CNY NYCLU. Her master’s research is centered on a black womanist understanding of disability and how that lens might impact the creation of future advocacy programs created for families of color.
